SUMMARY:Critical Thinking\, Part 1: The Paul & Elder Framework
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nPaul & Elder provide a holistic framework for critical thinking that balances emphases on character development as well as cognitive skills and habits. During this session\, you’ll consider personal and contextual factors that influence critical thinking including standards\, elements\, intellectual traits along with suggestions from Paul & Elder to increase student’s critical thinking by incorporating exercises into the curriculum. \nIn the workshop “Critical Thinking\, Part 2: The Brookfield Approach\,” (Oct 7 and Oct 23) participants will learn about strategies from another influential thinker on critical thinking\, Stephen Brookfield\, along with foundational\, intermediate\, and advanced strategies for embedding critical thinking in teaching. These Part 1 and Part 2 workshops can be taken in any sequence. \nLearning Objectives:\n1. Explore the Paul & Elder framework for critical thinking. \n2. Identify opportunities to improve students’ critical thinking through curricular enhancements.3. \nDomain Experience Units:\nCritical thinking is a component of student motivation\, related to goals and values\, sense of autonomy\, and expectancies. Faculty that attend this workshop and implement at least one teaching change are eligible to earn 1 Domain Experience Unit (DEU) toward their Teaching Effectiveness Certificate in Student Motivation during the 2026-27 academic year. \nPresented By:\nJen Garrett-Ostermiller\, CTLI Director \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration:\nPlease register for this event.
