SUMMARY:Critical Thinking\, Part 2: The Brookfield Approach
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nStephen Brookfield presents practical strategies at the foundational\, intermediate\, and advanced levels for promoting students’ development of critical thinking skills. We’ll be exploring the strategies he recommends and workshop participants will choose an idea and begin planning to implement it in one of their classes. \nIn the workshop “Critical Thinking\, Part 1: The Paul & Elder Framework\,” (Sept 18 and Oct 9) participants will learn about a holistic perspective on teaching critical thinking\, complimentary to Brookfield’s approach. These Part 1 and Part 2 workshops can be taken in any sequence. \nLearning Objectives:\n1. Compare and contrast definitions of critical thinking. \n2. Explore strategies for scaffolding critical thinking skill development in various courses. \nDomain Experience Units:\nCritical thinking is a component of student motivation\, related to goals and values\, sense of autonomy\, and expectancies. Faculty that attend this workshop and implement at least one teaching change are eligible to earn 1 Domain Experience Unit (DEU) toward their Teaching Effectiveness Certificate in Student Motivation during the 2026-27 academic year. \nPresented By:\nJen Garrett-Ostermiller\, CTLI Director \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration:\nPlease register for this event.
