SUMMARY:Fit the Source to Your Course: Defining Appropriate Research for Your Course
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the VSCS Librarians: \nWe all want students to use credible sources in their research assignments. But while peer-reviewed sources are frequently touted as the most reliable – and are required for research assignments at all levels – they are not the only source of credible information\, and may be inaccessible to students in introductory courses. The three VSCS Libraries Humanities Liaisons (Charlotte Gerstein\, Lindsey Roberts and Katie Beth Ryan) will devote this hour to discussing different types of sources and their appropriateness for different courses and assignments. We will brainstorm ways of introducing students to traditional peer-reviewed research\, and demonstrate different ways of finding credible sources\, both within and beyond the libraries.  \nIf you plan to attend\, please add the event and Zoom link to your calendar\, now. \n\nZoom Meeting Link:\nJoin Zoom Meeting

SUMMARY:Rural Belonging in the Academy
DESCRIPTION:Much has been written about the experiences of rural students attending urban and suburban universities\, where they often feel invalidated\, misunderstood\, and out-of-place. What can we learn from these experiences\, which may be due to those universities’ geolocations and may be due to more universal aspects of the culture of academia. We are uniquely situated as a predominantly rural university serving a high proportion of rural students. This workshop\, presented by Vermont State’s ROAD to Success in collaboration with the Center for Teaching & Learning Innovation\, will explore best practices for supporting and teaching rural students.   \nParticipants in the workshop will:  \n* Explore takeaways and lessons learned from the student voices panel event held on September 10th.  \nThe workshop will be centered around participants’ responses to the panel\, and resources will be available to support learning of the following\, should one or more fit the interests of the group:  \n* Interrogate various viewpoints on rural students with an aim toward viewing rural experiences and identities as strengths and ensuring that higher education adapts to these strengths.  \n* Consider the benefits of active learning and place-based pedagogy as a way to make academia more inclusive of rural students.  \n* Discuss the hidden curriculum and its potential impact on rural students. \nPlease note that faculty participants will receive a stipend for their attendance and participation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register for this event. When you do\, you will receive an automatic email from the CTLI confirming your registration. SUMMARY:Building Anti-Racist Educators: Reading & Inquiry Series - May Meeting
DESCRIPTION:As educators\, we want to do our jobs well. We want to be fair\, we want to promote safe communities\, and we want to support all our students in every aspect of their lives. Tools help us realize these goals that we already have.\n \n\n\n Educators\, even those with experience and compassion\, may unconsciously negatively impact students in their classrooms. We believe that through consistent study and reflection\, we can slowly address our own unconscious biases and make changes so we can better support the academic\, social and emotional well-being of our students.\n \n\n\n We want YOU to be part of a decentralized inquiry series to support educators to better explore their own biases and improve their own teaching practices.\n \n\n\n This Reading and Inquiry Series provides a monthly set of tools for learning\, introspection and having conversations about issues of racism in our university\, classrooms and communities. We hope that through regular reflection and conversation\, you can get better at recognizing and resisting your biases and the impact they have on your students and colleagues. \n\n \nTo receive a calendar invitation\, Zoom link\, and access to the Canvas space\, please fill out the Vermont State Colleges Building Anti-Racist Educators Sign-Up Form. Note – you only need to complete the form once for the year!\n \n\nSponsored and facilitated by the VTSU Office of DEISJ and the VTSU CTLI.
