Providing Choices: Impact on Student Motivation and Engagement

This one-hour Zoom workshop introduces participants to the use of student choice in fostering motivation, engagement, and deeper learning. The session will introduce choice boards as a flexible instructional resource that provides structured options while maintaining alignment with course outcomes.

Faculty will engage in hands-on activities to design or revise a choice board tailored to their disciplinary context

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the motivational benefits of student choice using principles of autonomy, competence, and relevance.
  2. Design a discipline-specific choice board activity that offers meaningful options while maintaining clear expectations and assessment criteria.
  3. Implement tips related to choice board development and feedback.
