The Center for Teaching & Learning Innovation is organizing a faculty learning community (FLC) for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year, which will focus on student motivation.
An FLC is an interdisciplinary group of faculty members who collaborate with their peers to explore a topic of interest related to teaching and learning. It is structured as a year–long program in which the group learns together, shares ideas, provides encouragement and support, and affects positive change.
In addition to learning from one another and relevant books, articles, podcast episodes, etc., the FLC members will work together to complete a collaborative project, as identified by the members of the group. Examples of projects could include:
- a workshop or presentation with strategies for student motivation related to homework
- a series of lesson plans use by other faculty
- a retention-focused intervention in collaboration with student success colleagues
- a student-facing resource
- a proposal for a structural institutional change
The project topic is only limited by the imagination of the FLC members.
We encourage faculty to explore professional development funds through their union contract as a possibility for compensation. Faculty should expect to spend 1-2 hours per week for the duration of the academic year when making this commitment.
